2001 British Open Shogi Championships - Results

Report:

The 2001 British Open Shogi Championships were held on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May at The University Centre in Cambridge, UK. The international field of 14 players found the new venue to their liking and produced a very competitive tournament right up to the end of the final game to be completed, which was between Tony Hosking, the 2000 British Champion, and the new British Champion, Les Blackstock. Les will now represent Britain at the World Shogi Championships (WSC) in New York later this year. Marc Theeuwen, the 2001 Dutch Champion and Dutch representative at the WSC, was placed 2nd only because of a defeat by Les in Round 4. Dave Faldon, who had never played in a Shogi tournament before, was the highest placed kyu player in 5th place.

The event was honoured with the visit of 3 Shogi Professionals from Japan: Mr Aono 9-dan, Mr Maeda 8-dan and Ms Ajiki Ladies 2-kyu. After the Saturday and Sunday rounds had been completed they played simultaneous displays. They also offered help and guidance to all the players between the afternoon rounds, which was greatly appreciated by everyone involved. We hope they enjoyed their visit to Cambridge as much as we benefited from their advice.

Finally special thanks are due to the Cambridge Go Society and MSO Cambridge for allowing us to share their venue, to the Japan Foundation for sponsoring the visiting Professional players, and to the members of the Royston and Cambridge Shogi Club for their help throughout the weekend.

For the 3rd year running we've had glorious weather. We are hoping to see you all, and the good weather(!), again next year in Cambridge.

Photos from the weekend are available for viewing on this site.
